In 1837, inhabitants voted to make the locale the seat of county government. It is generally accepted that the town, formally incorporated on January 27, 1838, was titled after Albany, New York, but a small-town legend holds that, amid the vote to determine the locale of the county seat, patrons of Dowell's tavern shouted "All for Benny!", then "all Benny," which led to the town being called Albany. During the Civil War, Albany was attacked by Confederate forces, and many buildings, including the courthouse, were burned. A marker in the courthouse square notes that Clinton was the native county of Civil War terrorist Champ Ferguson, hanged after the war for atrocities. Albany is positioned in south-central Clinton County at 36 41 36 N 85 8 7 W (36.693280, -85.135286). The town/city lies at an altitude of 960 feet (290 m) at the foot of the edge of the Cumberland Plateau.
Albany Rock, a spur of the plateau, rises northeast of the town/city to an altitude of 1,700 feet (520 m).
According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 2.2 square miles (5.8 km2), of which 0.004 square miles (0.01 km2), or 0.23%, is water. There were 1,165 housing units at an average density of 342.7 per square mile (132.3/km ).
There were 1,018 homeholds out of which 25.1% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 37.5% were married couples living together, 14.5% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 44.8% were non-families.
In the city, the populace was spread out with 21.5% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who were 65 years of age or older.
The median income for a homehold in the town/city was $14,558, and the median income for a family was $22,652.
